2003 Detroit Auto Show - Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota FJ Cruiser

Looking like the spawn of a Hummer H2, a Honda Element, and a classic Toyota FJ40, the FJ Cruiser concept is "chiseled from a half-century of Toyota trucks," according to Jim Press, the company's American boss. That's quite a lot of hyperbole for so small a vehicle, but it's a useful battle cry for Toyota's charge into every SUV segment extant. The FJ Cruiser is a two-door based on the next-generation Toyota Tacoma pickup. Both its exterior and interior have been designed by guys in their twenties, and the FJ reflects their generations' obsessions: fun, function, and funkiness. Mechanically, it rides on a version of the next Toyota Tacoma pickup and carries a 3.4-liter V-6 underhood. The best part: The FJ is rumored to be a go.
