2003 Detroit Auto Show - Ford Freestyle FX
Ford Freestyle FX

On sale in 2004, the all-wheel-drive Freestyle is a crossover wagon that looks far better than recent spy photos had suggested. The car shown at Detroit is still a concept, but the exterior gives us a pretty clear idea of what we'll be seeing on the road. What we won't get is the concept vehicle's clever retractable rear roof, wherein at the push of a button the rearmost side windows retract into the rear fenders and then the back portion of the roof and the rear window move forward with the roof rails telescoping into their forward portions. When complete, the D-pillar joins the C-pillar, resulting in a configuration not unlike that of the current Explorer Sport Trac, with an open cargo bed. What you will see next year are the handsome, high-quality interior, a 3.0-liter V-6 with continuously variable transmission, skid and traction control, a flexible cargo hold, and seating for six.
