2003 Detroit Auto Show - Lincoln Navicross
Lincoln Navicross

The short and stubby Navicross seeks to redefine the hard-to-define crossover category with a three-box, all-wheel-drive sedan built on a Lincoln LS platform. A supercharged, 32-valve, 4.2-liter V-8 sends power to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic. The center-opening side doors open to reveal a B-pillarless cabin that seats four in two-toned-leather comfort. While the interior is typically concept-car futuristic, recent Lincoln design symmetries that have appeared in the new Navigator and Aviator are apparent. The exterior, too, clearly follows the broad-shouldered design themes established by Lincoln with 2001's MK9 and 2002's Continental concepts. Why is this thing called a crossover? Because there's a hatch that lifts up and a tailgate that folds down, revealing a wagonlike, wood-lined cargo compartment. This is clearly what Lincolns of the next decade are destined to look like.
