2003 Detroit Auto Show - Chevrolet Equinox
Chevrolet Equinox

With the Equinox, Chevy hopes to bring more room to the baby SUV segment, with a long wheelbase (112.5 inches) and wide stance (61.6 inches). But Margaret Brooks, Equinox marketing director, claims that the mini-ute's ace in the hole will be its functionality, with an array of storage possibilities, such as a rear MultiFlex seat for cargo and people. "Equinox will be the largest vehicle in its class and set new standards for compact SUV functionality. Its crossover-based architecture responds to customer needs for more refinement, enhanced ride and handling, and increased comfort." That platform consists of MacPherson struts up front with a four-link set up at the rear. Ample, if not class-leading, power (185 hp) comes courtesy of a 3.4-liter V-6, which also provides for a 3500-pound towing capacity. Production starts in early 2004.
